Hey Love,
I hope you are doing well. In the 3rd week of February, when there was no lockdown when everything was fine and we could go out freely. I went to Mirza Ghalib ki Haveli in Chandni Chowk. Today, in this post I will tell you about that visit. I know we can’t visit it right now, but I was missing going out, so thought of revisiting those memories, moreover, you can keep it saved for the time when everything will be fine again.
Place: Ghalib ki Haveli
Address: Mir Qasim Jaan Gali, Ballimaran, Delhi, 110006
How to reach: The nearest metro station is Chandni Chowk on Yellow Line. Take an exit from Gate number 1, and walk towards Nai Sarak, from there ask locals about ‘Ballimaran’ and they will guide you. You can also take an e-rickshaw from the metro station, but we preferred walking.
Entry Ticket: Free of cost.
Visiting Hours: 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It remains closed on Monday and Gazetted holidays.
A 300-year-old Mughal Era structure, this haveli was gifted to Ghalib by one of his admirers. It was in this haveli where Ghalib spent his last 10 years of life. Ghalib wrote some of his finest ghazals here and even recited them to the audience in the evening.
After his death and being handed down to many owners and being served as a wedding hall, this haveli was finally handed over to the Delhi Government and was granted the position of the heritage site in 1997.
Here in this haveli, you will find a sculpture of Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib. Shri Bhagwan Rampure is the sculptor of this statue, which was unveiled by Shrimati Sheila Dixit on 26 December 2010. There are some of his clothes presented here, original manuscripts of some of his compositions. Apart from this, there is a huge painting of Mirza Ghalib enjoying his hukka. If you are looking forward to knowing more about the era in which Ghalib lived then you will be disappointed. But there are boards on which are written Ghalib’s poems and couplets, his hobbies, about his life which will keep you engaged. This haveli will give you little bit idea of Ghalib’s life.
My Experience: I liked this place, it’s a very small place where you can spend 30-40 minutes maximum. What I enjoyed the most was reading his works on boards here and there. Moreover, I was excited to see the original manuscripts of his writings, his handwriting, I cannot understand Urdu, but believe me, I got thrilled to see it.
Though I find it a little bit smelly, a little bit. But it was overall okay. The fact that Ghalib lived there and wrote some of his compositions here amused me. I liked imagining Ghalib, sitting in the courtyard writing or walking early in the morning, immersed in his thoughts. And then, in the evening reciting his ghazals for his audience. It must be amazing to hear his ghazals from him.
It is a place which I wanted to visit for long and I enjoyed it,
If you are a Ghalib fan, visit this place, to get an idea of his life, his house more closely.
After this, we went to eat the famous falooda of Giani di Hatti, which is 10 minutes walk away from the haveli. The falooda was so delicious, if you are visiting Chandni Chowk, then go for this place, you will never regret eating falooda from here.
With this, we have come to the end of this post. I will see you with the next post, till then keep celebrating life!
If you are looking forward to visiting more places in Delhi, then here is a post about our visit to Lodhi Art District, give it read.
With Love,
Komal
