Hello Everyone,
Hope you all are doing well. Can you believe that there is a beautiful monastery in New Delhi? I was thrilled to know that there is a monastery in Majnu ka Tilla. It was in January when I visited this monastery and Tibetan Market in Majnu ka Tilla. So keep reading to know more about this place.
Place: Majnu ka Tilla, Tibetan Market
Address: New Aruna Colony, Majnu-ka-Tilla, Timarpur, Delhi, 110054
How to reach: Nearest Metro Station is Vidhan Sabha metro station on Yellow Line. You have to take an e-rickshaw from there.
Timings: The market is open from 11 AM to 9 PM.
Majnu Ka Tilla is a settlement colony of Tibetan refugees. It is easy to miss the entry of the Tibetan Market as it is very crowded, so keep your eyes open. Also, I won’t suggest you go there on your own vehicle, especially not a car, because there is no parking space.
Now, here comes the fun part. In this market, you can get beautiful shawls, Pahari topi, jackets, cute showpieces for home décor, and fashion accessories like earrings, chains, bracelets and whatnot. You will get a variety of things here. The market reminded me of the Dehradun Tibetan market and some of the fashion accessories even reminded me of the Thamel market in Kathmandu.
I loved the vibe of the place. The market looks so appealing with pashmina shawls, cute show-pieces and accessories. It will instantly take you on a tour of hill-stations.
On the one end of the market, there is a small monastery. You can see many houses from there in which residents have put Tibetan prayer flags on the rooftop, and the view looks delightful from there. As it is quite crowded, you may not find it as photogenic, but the place is really pleasing. After visiting the monastery, we had Laping from the shop in front of the monastery.
Laping is a vegetarian Tibetan street food. Oh, and the thought of it makes me want to eat it again. It is spicy but scrumptious. After having laping, we had look at the market and reached a small park at the end of the market. This park has so many prayer flags hanged there that it looks touristy. You can also have a good view of the Signature Bridge from there.
Now let me tell you what we ate there, all of the cafes are so cute there that you just want to click photographs in front of each and every café. This place is famous for Tibetan dishes and is a paradise for momo lovers. After spending some time in the park, we went to Lhasa Café. The ambience of café is stunning. The photographs of Leh, beautiful wall hangings made the ambience of the café aesthetic. As this café is famous for its breakfast, you will get options like apple pie and pastries here. We just had hot chocolate from here and the hot chocolate felt so warm in the cold weather of January.
We wanted to go to Tee Dee restaurant, but it was on waiting, and we were very hungry to wait. So we went to Ama’s Restaurant. The restaurant looks a little bit formal but cosy. The main purpose of going there was momos, and believe me, the momos there were mouth-watering. The filling was so juicy and my stomach felt full after one plate of momos.
My visit to this market was one of the major highlights of the January, I loved the place, the vibe, and the comfort feeling there. It made me forgot the hush and rush of the city. You may find it a little crowded, but I would still say, the place has some calming effect. And visiting this place will give you a desire to have a trip to the mountains.
This place gave me a nostalgic trip to the mountains and the markets there. My father used to say no to everything I asked to buy. His logic being, buy things which you need. I didn’t buy anything this time too, but the visit took me back to the memory lane.
I would recommend this place to all the foodies, those who want to try Tibetan cuisines and delectable momos, also, if you want to have a totally different experience in Delhi, then go for this place.
And with this, we have come to the end of this post. I hope you found it helpful. Also, if you are looking forward to exploring Delhi, then give this post a read. I will see you with the next post, till then, keep celebrating life!
With love,
Komal
